Have you recently seen a difference in the temperature displayed between your thermostat and your actual room temperature? It could be a result of a malfunctioning thermostat.

Reasons Why Your Thermostat Isn’t Working

There might be several reasons why your thermostat is not working properly. It can be caused by dead batteries or a blown fuse.

How to Fix a Thermostat That is Not Working

Here are six troubleshooting tips for common thermostat problems:

1. Check if the thermostat is getting power

If your thermostat is not working, the first thing to check is the power source. Sometimes it may be disconnected from the power source, which usually happens because of dead batteries, blown fuses, or tripped circuit breakers.

2. Check if your thermostat is dirty

If your thermostat is dirty, it can interfere with both mechanical and electrical functions. You can use a soft, clean brush to gently wipe its components or compressed air to clear debris. Just be sure not to use a wet cloth or a wet wipe as it can damage the thermostat.

3. Check for any terminal screws or loose wires inside the thermostat

Check that there are no loose wires or terminal screws that are detached or corroded and fix any that are present.

4. Check if your thermostat settings are correct

Sometimes you may find that your furnace or air conditioner is continuously blowing air. This is because your thermostat’s fan is set to ON mode. Instead, the fan settings should be set to AUTO so that the blower will only operate when the furnace or air conditioner heats or cools the air, respectively.

5. Check if your thermostat is placed in a convenient place

If you want your thermostat to function optimally, it should be placed somewhere with a neutral temperature so that the surrounding temperature does not interfere with its reading. For example, do not keep your thermostat in the kitchen since the cooking fumes can confuse the reading of the thermostat. Rather, always keep your thermostat in a well-insulated area.

6. Consider replacing your thermostat if it’s too old

Keep in mind that thermostats are basically electronic devices, and they can’t last forever. An old thermostat may be more costly in the long run as it leads to a lot of wasted energy and gives you higher electricity bills.
